When I reflect on my journey, it was never my dream to work in Higher Education. I loved music and entertainment. I loved the way gospel music drew me closer to my faith and I loved how hip hop exposed to me to my culture. One thing I didn’t love was school. Many people don’t know this about me, (only my mom) but I barely graduated from high school. It was a college algebra final that determined by future in education, ha-ha. Luckily I passed, because, here I am now 2 degrees later (working on the 3rd one soon) on my way to work at the University of Virginia!
I wasn’t challenged academically until I went to college. I discovered the importance of hard work during my time in undergrad and graduate school. I was dedicated to pursuing a career that fulfilled me which meant doing everything I needed to succeed. I ended up finding my purpose in education (I still love music) and having a love for helping college students during an important time of their life. I had a phenomenal black woman, mentor and leader believe in me during college and I knew I wanted to do the same for other students who looked like me.
I find myself always telling people to trust their journey. Your journey was specifically made for you. I find peace in knowing that my journey is mine and no one else’s. I also find joy in knowing that there is so much more to accomplish along my journey. I’m owning my journey and I want to inspire others to do the same.
Dedication, hard work plus patience – Nipsey Hussle
