A Teen Who Chose a Different Path
School wasn’t always easy for me growing up. In middle school, I was known more for fighting and getting into trouble, often hanging around the wrong crowd. At the time, I thought I was just living my life and doing what everyone else was. Looking back now, I realize I was heading down a path that could have hurt my future.
I cared a lot about fitting in . The problem was, the choices I was making weren’t helping me grow—they were holding me back. Fighting became something I reacted to without thinking. If someone disrespected me or said something I didn’t like, I was ready to respond right away.
Eventually, things started catching up with me. I had to deal with consequences, and I started realizing that the same people I was trying so hard to impress weren’t going to help me succeed in life.
The Moment Things Changed
High school was next. It was then that I had to really assess my situation and ask myself an honest question: What do I want my future to look like? This was a turning point. I wanted to come in with a different approach and attitude.
I realized that if I kept making the same choices, I might not even graduate. That thought made me stop and think about the bigger picture. I knew I had to make some changes if I wanted something better for myself.
The first step was separating myself from some of the people I spent time with. That was one of the hardest things I had to do. Sometimes growing up means realizing that certain friendships are not helping you move forward.
I also started focusing more on school. I worked harder on my assignments and stayed determined to finish. Slowly but surely, things began to improve.
Finishing Early
One of the biggest accomplishments in my life so far was completing my high school diploma early. That moment showed me something important about myself: I am capable of more than I thought.
Even though I struggled in school – disliking the environment, switching to online learning, dealing with traumatic deaths, and being told I wouldn’t walk the stage – finishing early was a huge victory. It reminded me that the past doesn't define the future. I dedicated myself in September and finished in December; those 4 months of hard work paid off sooner than I thought.
Looking Toward the Future
Now that I’ve completed my diploma, I’m focused on what comes next. I’m considering going to trade school so I can learn a skill and start building a career. I’m also thinking about the possibility of college in the future. The difference now is that I actually believe in myself and my ability to succeed.
A Message to Other Youth
If you’re a young person who feels like you’re stuck in a cycle of trouble, fighting, or hanging around the wrong people, I want you to know something important: You can change your direction. Your past doesn’t have to control your future. The people around you don’t have to decide who you become. Sometimes all it takes is one decision to start doing better for yourself. I’m still learning and growing every day, but I know this for sure: choosing a better path was the best decision I ever made.
